Experiences of the Great War

Mother

It is apparent from this very family-focused letter from Thomas Hannan to his mother that he is permitted to receive food parcels from home. He also welcomes news of the rest of the family.

Thomas also reveals the strength of feeling that he has for his cause, and clearly feels support for his views within the camp where he is with like-minded men.

He tells his mother that he considers that the tide is turning against war, and 'people are returning to sanity'. In America there are growing bands of conscientious objectors, and '… every day from now will see the Peace Army increase'.

He also tells her she must consider herself fortunate for the good life she had enjoyed thus far.
