Experiences of the Great War

Material for secondary schools

Download the case studies

Discover more about the First World War using primary sources from the National Library of Scotland collections.

These downloadable resources are suitable for secondary school pupils and teachers, and focus on different aspects of the First World War.

Case studies 1 and 2 are suitable for third level, Curriculum for Excellence, and focus on the personal stories of two young people from Scottish families:

  • Mairi Chisholm was an ambulance driver and first aider based at Pervyse in Belgium
  • Archibald Dickson was a young Midshipman in the Royal Navy who died at the Battle of Jutland in 1916.

Both case studies contain 12 primary sources and suggested activities.

Case studies 3 and 4 — which will be available shortly — are suitable for pupils studying Higher Scottish History: Impact of the Great War, 1914-1928.

  • Case study 3 explores the theme of conscientious objectors
  • Case study 4 looks at Earl Haig.

Both case studies contain 12 primary sources which can be used for class discussion, the extended essay, and practice for Paper 2.

All of the case studies will be available in a printed format, free of charge and on request, from autumn 2014. Please contact learning@nls.uk for more information.
