Experiences of the Great War

Brother

Among Thomas Hannan's correspondence are letters from his brother David, who was serving with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at that point during the Great War.

Apparently very much in sympathy with Thomas's views, David respects the courage of his brother's conviction:

'My prayers are with you that strength of mind that the great faith which you have and have shown will ever remain solid and help you to go on doing your duty as you see it and believe it. What I feel within me that you should suffer punishment for your ideals I can't express and still less so can I give vent to the pride that I feel in having a brother true to his faith …'

David feels the same pride for their other brother — 'Brave young Stanley, who died in the carrying out of his ideals.' Stanley Livingstone Hannan was killed in action with the Royal Field Artillery in November 1917.
