Experiences of the Great War

Final 'push' of the Allies and collapse of German Army morale

By November 1918, the greater part of the German Army on the Western Front was in disarray.

The Allies had more manpower, were better equipped, and were on the offensive. German morale had collapsed and discipline broken down.

General Haig recorded the situation in his diary:

'I had a long talk with General Byng. His Army yesterday defeated parts of 14 Divisions. He finds that our men are fighting better than they had ever done, and are killing more Germans. He has noticed many more German dead after a battle. He ascribes this to our men feeling that they are better men than the Germans, and now always fight it out. A few months ago this was not always the case. Many German Officers were captured drunk yesterday.'
