Allied counter-attacks
The French General Foch counter-attacked from 18 July 1918. General Haig himself made the first of a series of victorious attacks at Amiens on 8 August — seen as a turning point or 'black day' by the German High Command.
Between August and November the Allies achieved a succession of victories:
- Amiens, 8-13 August
- Bapaume, 21 August to 1 September
- Scarpe, 26 August to 3 September
- Havrincourt and Epehy, 12-18 September
- Cambrai and the Hindenburg Line, 27 September to 5 October
- Flanders, 28 September to 14 October
- Le Cateau, 6-12 October
- Selle, 17-25 October
- Sambre, 1-11 November.
