Experiences of the Great War

The Armistice

The Armistice that ended the First World War came into force at 11am on 11 November 1918.

General Haig records the day in his diary with his usual detached style, beginning with his customary weather report: 'Fine day but cold and dull'.

He mentions the poor state of the German Army and his meeting with the Prince of Wales and various Allied commanders and foreign dignitaries.
