Experiences of the Great War

Regional tribunal

Letters of reference attesting to Thomas Hannan's character and moral objection to war dating from December 1916 survive among his papers at the National Library of Scotland.

These may have been written in support of Thomas's appeal to the regional tribunal, which was his next opportunity to put his case after his local tribunal.

A letter dated March 1917 from the Army Recruiting Office in Sauchiehall Lane, Glasgow, informing Thomas that he must present himself at the office for service, indicates that his appeal to the regional tribunal was also rejected.

A second form (W3234) calling him to the office the following month suggests that he did not make himself available as requested.
