Experiences of the Great War

Hannan's local tribunal

In the months after the introduction of compulsory military service, Thomas Hannan was called to the colours.

He was enlisted as a private with the Highland Light Infantry at Glasgow on 24 June 1916, and officially became part of the British Army.

The first of Hannan's papers after that date relate to his local tribunal in November 1916. It is possible that this may not have been his first application for exemption, as some time had lapsed since his enlistment in June.

Thomas and Hannah's fourth child, Annabella, had been born in the summer of 1916, so there is a possibility he may have sought, and received, a short reprieve from military service at that time.

By November, however, Thomas was expected to join his regiment, and his subsequent application to his local tribunal for exemption for military service was rejected.
