| Description | King George V is being shown part of a mortar gun, or possibly the projectile that would be placed in the gun. He is surrounded by four uniformed men, one of whom is holding the mortar. Directly beside the group, a mortar gun has been set up on the ground. It is thought this photograph was taken by the British official photographer, John Warwick Brooke. Mortar guns were designed to fire shells at a high angle. They were developed as a result of the trench warfare that dominated World War I - another artillery piece with a high trajectory was the Howitzer. By firing at an angle greater than 45 degrees, the shell was able to fly over obstacles and drop into enemy lines. With a flat trajectory the shell or cannon travelled in a straight line until it made contact. [Original reads: 'H.M. having a mortar explained to him.'] |
