NEWTON STEWART is a thriving town,
a burgh of barony and police burgh,
principally in the parish of Penningham,
with a small portion on the opposite side of
the stream in the parish of Minnigaff,
Countv of Kirkcudbright. It is on the high
road from Dumfries to Portpatrick, and on
â– the right bank of the river Cree, here
crossed by a bridge of five arches, connect-
ing the two divisions of the town : and has
t> station on the Portpatrick and Wigtown-
shire railway, which is also the junction for
the line to Garlieston and Whithorn; the
town is 121 miles south-west from
Edinburgh, 82 south from Glasgow, 52 west
from Dumfries, 26 east from Stranraer and
8 north from Wigtown, and owes its
origin to a younger branch of the Stewarts,
Earls of Galloway, who possessed the estate
of Ca? tie-Stewart, and founded the village
upon it, to which they gave the name of
Newton Stewart. About the year 1778, the
estate fell into the hands of William Douglas
esq. of Carlingwark, who founded the town
of Castle-Douglas, when it was created a
bur.gh of'barony under the title of Newton-
Douglas, but it subsequently resumed its
original name. The town is principally
composed of one large street, in the centre
of which is the Town House, and is
governed by a provost, two bailies and
nine councillors. At the upper extremity
of. that- part- of the town in Minnigaff
parish, there is a large moat hill, where
David Graham, brother to the famous
John Graham, of . Claverhouse, Viscount
NEWTON STEWART.
Dundee, and superior of this district prior
to the Revolution, administered justice.
Works were completed in 1882 for pro-
viding water by gravitation, the source of
supply being the Coldstream burn, about 4
miles distant: about half way between the
intake at the burn and the town, a tank
and filter have been constructed, the former
having a capacity of 100,000 gallons ; the
cost of the works was upwards of £4,000.
Drainage works were carried out in 1899,
at a cost of £8,000. The Established
church is an elegant modern structure,
iind there are also United Free churches,
and a Roman Catholic church. The
Douglas Academy, founded by Samuel
Douglas esq. of Jamaica, and the Ewart
Institute, founded by James and John
Ewart, merchants of this district, are richly
endowed educational establishments, incor-
porated under the title of the Newton
Stewart Educational Trust. The Industrial
Home here, was founded by a few benevo-
lent ladies, for the support of about fifty
destitute and orphan girls. M'Millan Hall,
in the centre of the town, is a structure
in the Italian style, erected, in 1885, at a
cost of £5,000, which sum was left for
that purpose by the family from which the
hall derives its name, and who formerly
carried on business in Newton Stewart.
The Mechanics' Institute has a news-
room supplied with the leading newspapers
and periodicals, and a library containing
about 1,000 volumes. The staple com-
modity here at present is wool, which is
furnished from the surrounding country,
and mostly supplied to the Yorkshire
markets. The weekly market is held on
Friday; cattle markets are held on the
second Friday in every month, and the
annual hiring fairs are held on the second
Friday in April and October and the horse
fairs in February, June and November. The
British Linen Companv's Bank, the Na-
tional Bank of Scotland Limited, the
Clydesdale Bank Limited and the Commer-
cial Bank of Scotland Limited, have each
a branch here. The principal hotels are
the " Galloway Arms " and the " Crown."
A newspaper called the " Galloway Ga-
zette " is published here every Saturday.
A monument in the Gothic style was
erected here in 1875, at a cost of £1,000, to
Randolph, 9th Earl of Galloway, who died
at Galloway House, near Garlieston, 2 Jan,
1S73. The area of the burgh is 234 acres;
rateable value, £10,017 ; the population in
1891, 2,332, and of the town, 2,738; in
1901, of the burgh, 2,204, and 2,598 in the
town.
