Angus Libraries and Archives

Angus has seven full time libraries in Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Montrose and Monifieth with a range of local history resources relating to the specific towns and immediate area. These resources include local history books, Ordnance Survey maps, newspapers on microfilm and some family history resources, such as local old parish records (OPRs) and census.

Angus Archives was established in 1989 as the archive of Angus Council and the repository for the records of the former burghs of Angus, Angus County Council and for private papers. Its focal point is to collect, record and preserve all archive material and photographs relating to the Angus area. The collections are available to researchers, local history groups, family historians, school parties and authors, among others.

Local History Centre

The Local History Centre, situated on the Reference Floor of Dundee Central Library, holds large and varied collections of material including maps, photographs and newspapers that would be of interest to local and family history researchers.

Notable collections include the Alexander Wilson collection of photographs and the Lamb collection of 19th century ephemera.

The Family History Collection includes old parish registers and census returns for Dundee and surrounding areas. We also hold a complete collection of Electoral Registers for Dundee, as well as Dundee street directories from 1783-1974.

We recommend that researchers from outside the local area contact us about their topics of interest before visiting.

The Mitchell Library

Glasgow Libraries has the Mitchell Library and 32 libraries in local communities. The Mitchell Library is one of Europe's largest public reference libraries and the hub of the city-wide information and online resources service. Many Mitchell Library books are also available for lending.

The Mitchell Collections include the Glasgow Collection which aims to preserve and make accessible material relating to the history, culture and people of Glasgow. Material includes historical and current newspapers, maps, books, and reports and special collections, like early Glasgow printing, railway and shipping.

Housing the City Registrar's Genealogy Centre, the Family History Centre and the City Archives, the Mitchell is now a one-stop shop of major resources for the family historian. Customers can research their ancestors, finding out how they lived using, for example, civil registration and census records, poor law, school, and other archives, burial records, monumental inscriptions and free access to the Ancestry websites.

Watt Library, Greenock

Inverclyde Libraries offer a wide range of services to anyone who lives, visits or works in Inverclyde. As well as the facility to borrow books, CDs, downloadable audio books and DVDs, we also offer many other services including internet access, lifelong learning courses, reading groups and we run various cultural events throughout the year.

The Watt Library in Greenock is Inverclyde's main local history and genealogy library with holdings including census returns, old parish registers, valuation rolls, post office directories, newspaper indices, etc.

You can access the Ancestry website free of charge from any of our libraries and we also run 'Geneology on the web' courses at our Greenock Central and Gourock Libraries, and a 'Finding our family together' family learning session on researching your family tree.

Opening hours at the Watt Library are 10am-1pm and 2-5pm Monday-Friday, and 10am-1pm on Saturdays.

Renfrewshire Heritage Services

Renfrewshire Heritage Services contains the historical archive for Renfrewshire. We have several unique collections of interest to people researching local and family history. Our collections include:

The Local Studies Department of the A K Bell Library holds an enormous range of information about the areas of Perthshire and Kinross-shire including directories, maps, newspapers, books and images. Carnegie Library

The South Ayrshire Libraries' Scottish and Local History Library is located on the first floor of the Carnegie Library in Ayr. The department houses a unique collection of books, pamphlets, directories, maps, plans, local newspapers and photographs. Disabled access is at the rear of building and there is a lift to the first floor.

Staff will help identify appropriate sources and give guidance on using the collection. The material is available for reference use only. We welcome visitors, and staff are happy to help customers with their enquiries.
