MENSTRIE, a village, has been trans^
ferred by boundary order No. 124 from
Stirlingshire to Clackmannanshire
MIIiNG-AVTE, a town and a police
burgh (generally called Millgay), is a
quoad sacra parish erected out of that of
New (or East) Kilpatrick, and in the
-countieB of Dumbarton and Stirling. For

MUIRAVONSIDE is a parish, in Lin-
lithgow poor combination and Falkirk small
debt court district ; it is 6 miles in length
by 2 in breadth, bounded by Polmont on
-the north-west, the river Avon on the east
.and south-east, which divides it from
Linlithgowshire, Falkirk on the west and
Polmont on the north. The village is on
the left bank of the Avon, and on the
west bank of the Union canal, and is about
2 miles from Linlithgow and about 4
^south-east from Falkirk. On the Avon in
this parish are the ruins of a nunnery,
founded by Malcolm IV. and half a mile
west are the remains of the ancient castle
•of Almond, for several generations the
favourite seat of the Livingstons, EarU of
Calendar. Muiravonside House is the resi-
dence of John Stirling esq. J.P. William
Forbes esq. D.L., J.P. of Callendar"; John
Stirling esq. J.P. ; T. Livingstone Lear-
month esq. of Park Hall, Polmont, are the
principal landowners. The land is nearly
all arable and enclosed, and beneath the
surface there is an abundance of coal.
The parish of Muiravonside covers an
area of 7,964 acres; rateable value,
.£26,647; population in 1891, 3,671, and in
1901, 5,332, and in the ecclesiastical parish,
3 441.
' Standburn is a village in Muiravonside
â– civil parish; population in 1901, 949.
Maddiston, 1 mile south from the church,
is a village in this parish. The population
with Sooty Hill in 1901 was 617.
At Causewayend, about 1 mile east from
the church, are the works of the Linlith-
gow Foundry Co. iron founders, and a
station on the Coatbridge and Manuel
branch of the North British railway.
At Blackston, in this parish, 34 miles
south from the church, is a station on the
same branch, from which place is a line
to Bathgate and Westfield. Bowhouse
station, also on the Manuel branch, is about
â– 2 miles south of the church. Manuel station
is also on the line from Edinburgh to Lar-
"bert.

PXiEAN" is &â–  quoad sacra parish, formed
from St. Ninians. East Plean village is
on the road from Falkirk to Stirling, hbout
3 miles south from Bannockburn station
on the Glasgow and Stirling section of the
Caledonian railway, 5 north from Falkirk
and 5 south from Stirling. In the village
is a hospital for old and indigent men,
more especially soldiers and sailors, founded
by Colonel Francis Simpson, of East Plean,
who died in 1831, having bequeathed up-
wards of £30,000 and an estate for the pur-
pose. The establishment contains 48 in-
mates, who are boarded, clothed, and have
a small allowance of pocket-money ; the
trustees granted the land on which a
church has been erected in connection with
the Church of Scotland. The population
of the ecclesiastical parish in 1891 was
845, and in 1901, 1,318, including 56 in the
William Simpson Asylum.

POLMOiNT is an ecclesiastical parish
and village, now amalgamated in the civil
parish of Grangemouth, under the Parish
Councils Act, May, 1900, in Falkirk small
debt court district; the parish extends 5
miles inland from the Forth, and is about
2 miles in breadth and 6 in length; it is
intersected by the main road from Edin-
burgh to Falkirk, and is bounded by the
river on the east, the Union canal on the
south, and the Firth of Forth on the north.
The village lies on the road from Lin-
lithgow to Falkirk, from which it is 3£
miles east, and has a station half a mile
south on the North British railway. Blair-
lodge, a large private school here, con-
ducted on public principles, has about
200 boarders, and stands in its own grounds
of 30 acres ; in connection with the school
is a chapel, seating 500, and a hospital.
Polmont Park is the residence of James
McKillop esq. M.P., D.L., J.P. ; Mill-
field, of David Mitchell esq. J.P. ; Park
Hall, of Thomas L. Learmonth esq. J.P.
and Park Hill, of Alexander W. Gray
Buchanan esq. The Duke of Hamilton;
"the Marquess of Zetland K.T., P.C. ; David

principal landowners. The district has
within its limits several coal mines, and
ounds in iron and freestone. The popu-
lation in 1901 was 4,690 in the ecclesias-
tical parish, and 561 in the village.
The small village of Nether Polmont is
on the coast from Falkirk to Bo'ness, from
which it is 4 miles distant.
Redding is a village in the district of
Polmont, abounding in coal mines, worked
by James Nimmo & Co. Limited. Nobel's
Explosives Co. Limited, have large works
here for the manufacture of detonators for
their dvnamite. Population^ in 1891 was
643, and in 1901, 874.
