CAMELON is a quoad sacra parish,
formed in 1852, from Falkirk civil parish,
and is in Falkirk small debt court district.
It lies on the road from Falkirk to Stirling
and the Forth and Clyde canal, and consists
principally of one street, about 1 mile west
from Falkirk station on the Glasgow and
Xinlithgow section of the North British
railway, and 2 west from Graham?tor
station on the Larbert and Grangemouth
STIRLINGSHIEE.
branch of the Caledonian railway. The
parish church is a plain stone edifice, built
in 1839, and has about 600 sittings. In the
vicinity there are several foundries and ex-
tensive chemical works. Camelon is a place
of considerable interest to the antiquary,
having been represented by the early writers
as a maritime city, in corroboration of
which assertion fragments of anchors,
blocks of stone with rings attached, and
even an entire boat of ancient model, have
been found embedded in the soil. The city,
it is alleged, was built by Vespasian (A.D.
69-79), and when subsequently possessed
by the Picts, had twelve brazen gates ; no
vestige, however, of this magnificent place
remains except one portion of a wall, visible
from the Glasgow road. The sea is now
about 4 miles distant. The population in
1901 wa3 6,386.
