BTJCHA.NAN is a parish, in the western
extremity of the county, in Dumbarton
poor combination and the small debt court
district of Stirling, about 19 miles in
length by 2 to 5 in breadth, and bounded
by Dumbartonshire and Perthshire and
Drymen parish on the north, Loch
Lomond on the west, by the river
Endrick on the south, and by Drymen
on the east. The river Forth rises in the
district, at the back of Ben Lomond, and the
Endrick waters intersect the parish. Lake
Arket, about one mile long by half a mile
wide, is in the northern extremity of the
parish, and from it flows the Arklet water
into Loch Lomond. The church is about 4
miles north-west from Drymen 6tation on
the Stirling and Balloch section of the
North British railway, 12 north from Dum-
barton and 24 west-by-south from Stirling.
Loch Lomond is a large inland lake, 23
miles long by 5 broad at its widest part, and
one at its narrowest point. The boundary
line between the counties of Stirling
and Dumbarton commences at the lake
shore about one mile west of Buchanan kirk
to the centre of the loch, and thence con-
tinues northwards to the west of Inchroin
Island, up the centre of the loch to a point
just east of Vow Island. There are several
islands in the lake, of which Inchcailloch,
Inchfad and Inchruin are included in Stir-
lingshire boundary. At - Rowardennan is a
ferry to Inveruglas, in Dumbartonshire.
There are several mountains in the parish
including Ben Lomond, 3,192 feet high.
Ben a Choin, 2,524 feet, Ptarmigan, 2,398
feet, Mael Mor, 2,249 feet, Cruinn a Bheinn
2,077 feet, and Ben Uird, 1,957 feet Rob
Roy's cave and prison are both in this
parish. The Montrose Home, opened by the
Duchess of Montrose in May, 1891, is at
Balmaha, on the borders of Loch Lomond
the institution, the cost of which was
entirely defrayed by the Duchess, is in con-
nection with the Evangelistic Institute of
Glasgow, and will hold 30 poor children.who
are boarded for two weeks. Buchanan
Castle, which occupies the site of the old
residence destroyed by fire in 1850, is the
seat of His Grace the Duke of Montrose
K.T. lord lieutenant of the county; it
stands on the margin of Loch Lomond,
near the Fort of Inversnaid, and is sur-
rounded by a large park. The castle
obtained its present name from having,
prior to 1682, when it was purchased by
the Montrose family, belonged to the
Buchanans, and the place has, since
1707, conferred the title of Marquess on
the Dukes of Montrose. Acreage of the
parish, 41,644; rateable value, £10,084;
population in 1901 was 487.
