LEUCHARS is a parish lying on the sea
coast to the north of St- Andrews bay, and
a village, which, is 5 miles north-west
from St. Andrews, having a station on the
St. Andrews, Leuchars 1 and Tayport section
of the North British railway, and half a
mile south is the station of Leuchars junc-
tion, on the North British main line^ The
parish, which is in the small debt court
district of St. Andrews, is about 5 miles
from north to south by the same ex-
tent in width, and is bounded on the north
by Forgan and Ferry-Port-on-Craig, west
by Logie and south by the Eden. The
atident Established, church, supposed to
have been erected in the 12th century, is
one of the most perfect examples of Norman
architecture in Scotland. There is also a
United Free church. The Pitcairn Insti-
tute, the gift of Mrs. Pitcairn, of Pitcullo,
contains a library and reading rooms, and
has recreation grounds attached to it.
Guard Bridge is in this parish; the Guard
Bridge Paper Co. Limited, have extensive
works here, and there is a station on the
North British railway. Balmullo, a small
village, is also in this parish. Near Leu-
chars there is the old castle of Earlshall,
which has been recently restored by its
owner, R. W. R. Mackenzie esq. The

parish comprises 13,409 acres ; rateable
value, £24,648; the population in 1891 was
2,370, and in 1901, 2,499, including 711
in the village of Leuchars and 715 in that
of Guard Bridge.
Balmullo and Lucklawhill form a village
in the parishes of Leuchars and Largo ;
population in 1901, 383.

LEVEN is a town in the parish of Scoonie
and is bounded on the weBt by the river
Leven, which here runs into the Firth of
Forth, and is crossed by a bridge, forms
a good harbour, and has a dock, 500 feet
long by 250 wide, capable of taking in
vessels up to 400 tons burthen, opened in
January, 1880, at a cost of £40,000. As a
seaside resort Leven attracts a large num-
ber of visitors during the summer months.
Inner Leven, connected with Leven by
a stone bridge over the Leven, has, in
conjunction with Buckhaven and Methil,
been made into a police burgh. The town,
which is the head of a small debt court
district, is 9 miles north-east of Kirkcaldy
and 3 south-west from Largo, and has a
