ridge rising north of the Leven, 12 miles
east from Kinross, 12 south-west from
Cupar, 9 north-west from Kirkcaldy and 3
-west from Markinch. The parish is in the
poor combination of Dysart and small debt
court district of Kirkcaldy, and is bounded
north by Falkland, east by Markinch, south
*by Kinglassie, and west by Portmoak (Kin-
ross-shire). The town, consisting principally
of one street, running from east to west,
is an ancient place, often frequented by
King James when holding court at Falk-
land; and here is the scene laid of the
-song of the "Jolly Beggars.'* The
streets are lighted with gas. At the
eastern entrance to the town is a public
green, which in former times was the scene
of varfious pastimes, and the place of annual
meeting for the pedlars or packmen of
•Scotland. The increase of this town is at-
tributable to the prosperity of its manufac-
tures consisting of flax spinning, and
"bleaching and paper making; the works
standing chiefly on the banks of the
Steven. There is a branch of the Union
Bank of Scotland; Limited, established
"here. The places of worship are the parish
church, a quoad sacra church at Prinlaws,
at the west end of the town, three United
Free churches, and a Baptist chapel. There
is a library consisting of about 1,200
volumes, connected with the Young Men's
•Christian Association, and Reading Boom.
Fairs are held on the first Tuesday after

Leslie, of Leslie House F.R.S.E., F.R.G.S.
and George D. Douglas-Clephane esq. of
Sfcrathendry, are the principal landowners,
The area of the parish comprises 4,944
acres; rateable value, £14,863 landward;
area of burgh, 99 acres ; rateable value,
£6,013; the population in 1891 was 3,886,
and in 1901, 3,960, including 479 in the
town ; the 3,479 persons in the town in
1901 were divided into 2,064 in the police
burgh and 1,523 in Prinlaws and Crofton-
terly, and 373 landward.
