St. Andrews section of tbe North British
railway. The town ie irregularly built,
and consists of three main streets and a
collection of houses bordering the links,
where three golf clubs are established,
with two good club houses. There is an
excellent water supply, which provides also
for Lundin Links and Met nil Docks. The
police burgh is governed by a provost, 2
bailies and 9 councillors. The sheriff holds
a small debt circuit court here, the day
after the second Monday in January, April
'and July, and Friday after the first Mon-
day in October. The principal imports are
flar, tow, barley, linseed, bones and tim-
ber. The staple trade of Leven ie the
preparation and spinning of flax and seed
crushing, paper making, engineering &c.
the millB of the first-named trade, es-
pecially, employing a considerable number
of hands. The Scottish Cyanide Co. also
' have extensive works at Kirkland, and
there is a bone dust mill, salt works and
rope walks, as well as a large timber
yard and bbw mill. In the district are
collieries, and the Fife Coal Co. whose
offices adjoin the railway station, are
large employers of labour. There are
branches here of the British Linen Co.'e
Bank, the Commercial Bank of Scotland
Limited, the National Bank of Scotland
Limited, and the Roval Bank of Scotland.
A fair is held on the Thursday after the
third Monday in July. The Greig Institute.
erected in 1873, contains a news room,
library, billiard room and a class room for
technical instruction, its name was adopted
in compliment to Mr. Greig, of Glencarse,
who gave the site and £1,000 towards the
building fund. There is an Established
church (the old church was demolished in
11103 and a new one erected on the same
Bite, at a cost of £5,000, which, with
the exception of £1,000 donation from
the heritors, was defrayed principally
by the church members) ; there are
also two United Free churches and
churches for Episcopalians and Baptists.
A large public school was erected in 1893,
at a cost of £10,000, for 1,200 children,
the average attendance being about 1,100.
A hequeBt by the late Edward Boase, of
Leven, of £500, yields a bursary of £25,
tenable for three years, and the late Alex-
ander Balfour, a former resident of Leven,
left £12 per annum for three bursaries for
boys or girls. The Caledonian hotel is near
the bay shore, and has a large posting es-
tablishment attached. The " Leven Ad-
vertiser " is published every Thursday,
price one halfpenny. The rateable value
of tbe town is £31,309; the population in
1891 was 4,577. and in 1901, 5,577.
