KILREI^NTY is a royal and parliamentary
burgh, also a parish, and contains the port
and village of Cellardyke. The burgh is 1
mile north-east of Anstruther Easter, 3
south-west from Crail, and 8 south-east from
St. Andrew's. The nearest station it
at Anstruther, on the North British rail
way. The parish extends 3 miles along
the shore of the Firth of Forth, by
2 inland, and is bounded on the west by
Anstruther Easter andCarnbee,north byAird
rie and east by Crail ; it is in the small debt
court district of Anstruther. The coast here
is one continued range of rocks, with two
email creeks, which form the harbour of
Anstruther, and the port of Cellardyke,
FIFESHIRE.
Nether Kilrenny, while the burgh of Kil-
renny is composed of Upper and Nether
Kilrenny, or Cellardyke, and is governed
by a provost, two bailies, a treasurer and
six councillors, and in conjunction with
St. Andrew's, the two Anstruthers, Crail,
Cupar and Pittenween, forms the St. An-
drew's district of burghs, and returns one
member to Parliament. The Town Hall,
which includes council, reading and amuse-
ment rooms, was erected and presented to
the burgh by Stephen Williamson esq. and
the representatives of the late Jas. Fowler
esq. The representatives of the late Col.
Anstruther, Walker Morrison esq. of Fal-
field, Col. Sir Fiolliott Williams Erskine
bart. of Cambo, and James Cairns esq, of
Rennyhill, are the principal landowners.
The area comprises if, 773 acres; rateable
value : burghal (including part of Anstru-
ther Easter), £5,402. The population of
the entire parish in 1891 was 2,998, and in
1901, 2,950, 2,542 being in the burgh of
Kilrenny and 166 in the burgh of An-
struther. Population of ecclesiastical parish
in 1901, 1,11)0.
The number of electors on the parlia-
mentary register in 1903 was 475.
The village and quoad Bacra parish of
Cellardyke (or Nether Kilrenny), is an ex
tensive fishing village, but forming part of
the burgh of Kilrenny. There is a small
harbour for fishing boats here. Cellardyke
is specially noted for its oil clothing, fishing
material, and net manufacturing, a consider-
able number of persons being employed in
these industries. Canvas buoys were first
made here, A. Black and Co. being the
patentees. The greater number of the in-
habitants are fishermen, about 200 boats
belonging to the place. The population of
the ecclesiastical parish in 1901 was 1,790.
