CERES (or Cyrus) is a parish, with a
village of same name, 3 miles south-east of
Cupar-Fife station on the Thornton Junction
and Dundee section of the North British
railway; the parish, which is in the small
debt court district of Cupar-Fife, extends 8
miles from north-east to south-west with ;
breadth varying from 2 to 4 miles. Thi.
boundaries of the parish are on the north
Kembnck and Cupar parishes, on the east
Cameron and Kilconquhar, on the north'
east St. Andrews, on the south Largo, and
on the west Cults. The parish church,
built in 1806, occupies an elevated site and
has an embattled tower with spire. It
will seat 1,100 persons. There are two
United Free churches in the village ; and
two public schools, situated respectively at
Craigrothie and Ceres. The inhabitants are
mostly employed in agriculture. Lime and
coal are found at Newbigging and The
Teasses. Races are regularly held here on
the last Saturday in June, to commemorate
the battle of Bannockburn, fought 24 June,
1314. The Leith Holiday Home (formerly
the Adamson Institute) provides a fort-
night's holiday for upwards of 300 poor,
and in many cases delicate children from
the slums of Leith. It is supported en-
tirely by voluntary contributions; T. and
R. J. Davidson, Cupar, joint secretaries ;
matron, Mrs. Hempseed.
The Eennels of the Fife Foxhounds are
situated at Harleswynd, in this parish ;
Capt. John Gilmour M.F.H., John Shep-
herd, huntsman. Cupar and St. Andrews
are convenient places for hunting visitors.
In the western part of the parish, on the
border of the Howe of Fife, are the ruins
of the House of Scotstarvit, and about a
mile south of the village is Craighall
Castle, the seat of the Hope family from
1625, but now also in ruins; and near
Craigrothie are the ruins of Struthers, the
original seat of the Earls of Crawford.
The farm of Easter Pitscottie occupies
the site of the house occupied by Robert
Lindsay, of Pittscottie, author of the
â– ' Chronicles of Scotland." Col. John
Anstruther Thomson V.D. of Charleton,
Collinsburgh, Edward Gorrie Baxter esq.
of Leasses house, the Hon. Thomas H. A.
E. Cochrane M.P., of Crawford Priory,

The area comprises 10,063 acres ; rateable
value, £10,982; the population in 1891 was
1,677, and in 1901, 1,545 in the parish and
607 in the village, of which 138 are in
Cupar parish.

are three small villages in the parish of
Ceres.
