Church of Scotland, and pressed his pet
proposal for a new translation of the Scrip-
tures, a proposal which took practical shape
after that monarch's accession to the throne
of England, and resulted in an authorised
version. In connection with the Estab-
lished church a fine hall was opened in
1894, seating 600 persons. An Episcopal
school, founded by the late Rev. G. H.
Forbes, continues to be conducted by his
trustees : the Episcopal congregation have
an iron church of a Gothic design,
at Ferguson place The old kirk of
the palish was at " Litel Kingorne," or
Kirkton, and -when the present church was
built in 1592-4 there was some litigation
with the heritors before the services could
he moved, which was not terminated until
1632; the " auld kirk" is now a ruin.
The cemetery at Bentfield was established
.by the Town Council at the cost of about
£4,000. The only mortification belonging
to Burntisland is Watson's, consisting of the
annual rent o* the East Binnlands, amount-
ing to an average of £74, which is divided
between three widows and the Board school-
master for the education of poor children.
The Board schools, erected here in 1876,
at a cost of £6,000, in the Elizabethan
etvle, are situated in front of a hill rising
mbre than 100 feet above the level of the
sea. Eoger Sinclair Aytoun, of Inchdair-
nie, the trustees of R. Kirke, of Green-
mount, James Shepherd, of Rossend Castle,
Rev. J. Haxton, of Pathhead, and Middle
ton Rettie, of Dunsarn, are the principal
landowners. The area comprises 2,565
acres; gross rateable value of the parish
in 1902-3, £38,071 ; rateable value of the
burgh, gross, £29,460. The population of
the parish in 1901 was 5,599, including
4,846 in the burgh and 141 on board vessels
in the harbour.
The number of electors on the parlia-
mentary register in 1902 wis 791.
