LASSWADE is a town and police burgh
and parish in Dalkeith poor combination
and small debt court district. The burgh,
which extends into the parish of Cockpen,
is 6 miles south of Edinburgh and 2 south-
west from Dalkeith. There are five railway
stations in the parish, viz. : Lasswade and
Polton (the terminus) on the Polton branch,
and Hawbhornden, Rosslynlee and Poma-
thorn, on the Peebles and Dolphinton sec-
tion of the North British railway. The
North Esk runs through the whole length
of the parish. The town has been greatly
'mproved by the erection of many substan
tial dwellings, and the opening of various
manufactories, including several paper mills
The parish church is an ancient structure,
and in the attached cemetery lie the re-
mains of William Drummond, of Hawthorn-
den, the poet, who died 4 Dec. 1649, and to
whom a memorial was erected in 1893 : one
aisle contains the burial vault for the noble
family of Dundas, and here was interred
Henry (Dundas), 1st Viscount Melville P.C.
and secretary of state during the adminis-
tration of Mr. Pitt; he died 29 May, 1811 :
the stained east window was erected in
1898 by Mrs. Moffat, of Eldin, in memory
of her husband. The organ was built
in 1897. There are traces in the
village of two religious foundations, St.
Ann's and St. Leonard's. Melville Castle,
on the bank of the Esk, is the seat of
Viscount Melville. Near here, on the same

Drummond, the poet and historian, and
now the seat of Lieut. -Col. Sir James

Pittendreich is the seat of Cyril Herbert
Dunderdale esq. Sir Walter Scott spent
the first years of his married life in a neat

wade; and Thomas de Quincey, the
author of the " Life of an Opium Eater,"
and many other works, lived in a cottage
at Polton, during 1840-41. Below Haw-
thornden are three caves, which in
troublous times afforded shelter to fugi-
tives ; the largest is 90 feet in length and
12 feet wide at the entrance, gradually
tapering inwards, and 6 feet in height,
[slateh's
