LENNOXTOWN AND CLACHAN OF CAMPSIE,
WITH THE PARISHES AND VILLAGES OF BALDERNOCK, CAMPSIE, STRATHBLANE, MILTON OF CAMPSIE AND
TORRANCE.
LENNOXTOWN (or Newtown of Campsic) is a large village in the
parish of Oampsie, 42 miles w. from Edinburgh, 22 s.s.w. from
Stirling, and 9 n.n.w. from Glasgow, and is a station on the Blane
Valley Branch of tlm North British Railway. In the village is the
extensive calico printing establishment of Messrs. R. IXalglish,
Falconer & Co and the Hurlet & Gainpsie Alum Works; and in the
vicinity are bleachtields and collieries. There are two comfortable
hotels within one minute's walk from the railway statiou. A
sheriff court for the recovery of small debts is held at the Lennox
Arms Hotel on the last Thursday in February, May, August, aud
November. An Established church, with a square lower, is
situated in a commanding position near the centre of the village ;
there are also neat places of worship belonging to tho I'ree church,
ti e United Presbyterians, and Roman Catholics. Several schools
are attached to these places of worship. Tho parish of Campsie
lies in the central part of the county, and extends eight miles
in length by seven in breadth. It is bounded nu tho north by
Urn parish of Fiutry.bv Bnhiernock and Strathblane on the west,
on the south by Oa&iler and Kirkintilloch, and mi the east by
Kilsyth. It is composed of a fertile strath <>r valley, b nnded by
ranges of the Campsie hills or fells on tho north, which are
elevated about 1,50U feet auove the level of the sea. The Clachan,
or town of Campsic, as it is designated, is distant rather more than
a mile from Lonnoxtown, and stands on the low grounds at the foot
of the far-famed Campsie glen, which from its romantic scenery
aud waterfalls is a place of great resort in the snmraer. The dis-
trict is the residence of several persons of distinction, and
ornamented by some elegant seats; those of Woodhead, Craig-
barouet and Glor.it are perhaps the most conspicuous. The rivers
Kelvin and Glazart pass through this palish, which is intersected
bv the two great roads from Kippen to Glasgow, aud from the latter
city to Edinburgh. Population in 1881,3,249.
The small village of Torrance, in the parish nf Campsie, or, as
it is generally called, the Torrance of Campsie, is about SJjJ miles
from Li nnoxtown, on the direct road to Glasgow, aud has a station
on tho Kelvin Valley line of Railway.
Baldeuknock, a parish (anciently Bathemoch). is situated in tho
southern extremity of the county. It is bounded by the river Kelvin
aud Allauder on the side fronting north-east, and by Campsie; and
on the south-west lies the loch of Ealdowie. The parish abounds
with cairns and similar memorials of early warfare. The most re-
markable nf its antiquities is a structure denominated " the auld
wife's lift;" it consists of three stones, two of which are laid on the
i artli close by the side of each other, aud on tho top of this the third
is placed, in the same direction, with their ends pointed to the
north aud south ; tho whole are 18 feet in length by 11 iu breadth
