LARBERT,
AND THE VILLAGE OF STENHOUSE-MUIR.
LARBERT, or Larbet, is a parish, the village, 3 miles from Falkirk
and 8 from Stirling, being beautifully situated on the side of a kill,
on the northern bank of the Carron. The parish contains some gentle-
men's seats of the first class, among which is Kinnaird, once the resi-
dence and property of Bruce, celebrated for his travels in Abyssinia, who
was born, and died, in this parish ; his remains are interred in the
parish churchyard, and a monument of iron, cast at Carron, is erected
over his grave. At the Reformation, an ancester of this enterprising
traveller repaired the old church. The present place of worship is a
handsome modern erection, with a square tower. Near this place the
great Roman road or causeway passes, and about a quarter of a mile to
the west the foundation of a bridge is visible when the Carron river is
low. The famous Falkirk cattle tryst is hold on a moor in this parish,
in the month of October, when 20,O(J0 to 30,001) head of cattle, and great
numbei'S of sheep are exposed for sale. The chief manufacture is that
of grates and stoves. Close to Larbert station are the works of Messrs.
Bobbie, Forbes & Co., for the manufacture of stoves, grates, ranges, &c.
The Established church is in the village, and there is a public Board
School. Acreage of the parish, 3,963. Population in 1881, 6,346, and
of the village, 831.
Stenhouse-Muir is a small and neat village, situated about half a
mile east of Larbert, in the same parish, and contains a Free church.
New Board Schools are now (1885) in course of erection, at an estimated
cost of £7)000. Another half mile distant is the hamlet of North
Broomage, near which is the Scottish National Institution fur the
Education of Imbecile Children — a handsome building in the style of the
continental ecclesiastical architecture. Here careful and skilful tuition,
varied as each case demands, succeeds in imparting a useful education to
and unfolding the inherent capabilities of many children of deficient
intellect, on which ordinary training would be inefficient. It is sus-
tained partly by donation and partly by fees which are paid by the more
wealthy parents. Near this institution is the Stirling District Lunatic
Asylum for the counties of Stirling, Dumbartou, Linlithgow and Clack-
mannan. Population of Stenhouse-Muir in 1881, 2,617.
