LARGO (UPPER and LOWER),
LUNDIN MILL, AND THE PARISH OF NEWBURN.
T ARGO parish lies on tho shore of the Firth of Forth, between i obtained. Almost the whole of the land is in a high state of cultivation.
Jj N(j\vburn and Kilconquhar on the east, and Leveu on tho west, its
inland quarters being bounded by Ceres. The parish contains three
villages, one called Uiter (or ICirkton of) Largo, Lower Largo, and
LuniunMill; the first is situated a mile from the sea, on the road
leading from Levcn to Anstruther — three miles from the former, nine
from the latter, eleven from St. Andrews, nine from Cupar, and twelve
from Kirkcaldy. Its length from north to south is nearly four miles
and a half, and its average breadth threemiles. The general surface is
diversified by running hills and valleys, interspersed with various small
woods. The most striking feature in the landscape is Largo Law, a
conical hill, with a double summit covered with verdure to upwards of
900 feet above tho sea, From its top a splendid view of the Firth of
Forth, with its islands, and the opposite shore of the Lothians, is

At Lower Largo are the net manufacturing works of Mr. David Gillies,
also the oil works of Messrs. David Russell & Co. The minerals are
coal and limestone, the latter being most excellent in quality, and, until
recently, was extensively wrought. In Upper Largo, which is a very
agreeable little village, stands the parish church, an ancient Gothic
fabric, with a spire rising from the centre. This was the birthplace of
the celebrated Scottish admiral, Sir Andrew Wood, who in the reign of
James IV.- defeated the English fleet under Stephen Bull, and other-
wise defended the shores of Scotland at his own private expense. The
East of Fife branch of the North British Railway Company passes
within a short distance of the village of Lower Largo, where there is a
station. A hospital, which stands in the village of Kirkton, was erected
by means of an endowment by a Mi-. John Wood, a native of the place
