KILPATRICK,
BOWLING, LITTLE MILL, MILTON, DUMBUCK, DDNGLASS, DUNTOCHER, HARDGATE, FAIFLEY, DALMUIR,
CLYDEBANK, KILBOWIE, YOKE It, AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
KILPATRICK (Old or West) is a post village, in the parish of its
name, 53 miles w. from Edinburgh, 10 w. from Glasgow, and
e. from Dumbarton, situated on the road between the two last-
named towns, and occupying a pleasant site at the foot of a hilly
country, in view of the Clyde. The name Kilpatrick signifies the
" Church of Patrick," but in this case tradition varies from fact, the
former authority statins; it to be tbo " cell," while the latter proves
tho definition just given to be proper, for Patrick never was an
anchorite; it is generally suppose,!, however, that this parish was
the birthplace of the celebrated titular saint of Ireland. The tra-
ditionary record asserts that, at the age of sixteen, this individual
was carried off from this then civilised Roman district hy a band
of Irish marauders, who made a descent upon this part of the
coast, and with other captives subjected to alnvcry in their own
comparatively barbarous country ; but the '• Ecclesia Kibernica "
distinctly states that be voluntarily landed en the northern shore
of Ireland in the year 401, after a residence of twenty-six years in
400
the Roman capital. The visit strengthened the connection that had
priorily existed between the two nations. Within its limited
locality the village has not the advantage of any manufactory. At
tho entrance of tho village from Dumbarton stands tbo parish
church, a neat stone edifice, surmounted by a handsome square
tower and clock, erected in 1812. At the east end of the village are a
Free church and an United Presbyterian church, and there is also
a Board school. Population of thn parish in 18dl, 8,708; of this
number the village contained 910. In 1884 the estimated popula-
tion of the rjarish was ll.GuO, and of the village 1,101).
Bowling is a small village about three-quarters of a mile west
fi'oni Kilpatrick, with a station on the North British Railway. At
Bowling Bay commences the Forth aDd Clyde canal, which, after
traversing U5 miles in an eastern direction, empties itself into the
Forth at Grangemouth, thus connecting the German Ocean with tho
Western Channel. This groat work was began in 17158, and opened
throughout on the 28tn July, 1790. Vessels drawing eight feet Qi
