water, having a nineteen feet beam, and a seventy-three feet keel,
can navigate this noble junction. The Trustees of the Clyde
Navigation have also a harbour here, for the accommodation of
vessels laid up during winter, or otherwises for sale. In ibe village
is a Free church, erected in 1869; there are also a Board school and
the Buchanan Institute, comprising library, reading and recreation
rooms. This handsome building, which has cost about £1,000, was
opened on December 13th, 1SS4, and was the munificent gift of
Andrew Buchanan, Esq., Aucheotorlie.
At Little Mill is a distillery and ship-building yard.
At Dunglass, half a mile west of Little Mill, are to be seen the
ruins qf an old fortification, or a Roman boundary, and in the
castle grounds a stone memorial pillar of Henry Bell, the eminent
engineer, obit, 1838. *
Milton and Dumbuck are on the road to Dumbarton; at the
former place is a paper mill and a Board school, also Milton
House, the residence of Andrew Muter, Esq. which is pleasantly.
situated on a declivity, commanding au extensive and beautiful
view of the Clyde. Estimated population of Bowling and Little
Mill in 1884, 900, and of Dumbuck and Milton, 700.
Duntocher is a considerable village, situated two miles north
from Kilpatrick. It contains three large mills for spinning and
manufacturing cotton, which were kept in active operation by
the late Alexander Dunn, Esq., of Duntocher, up to the period of
his death, shortly after which the cotton mills were closed, pending
the question of succession being settled. The principal part of the
town is lighted with gas. The Established church was erected in
1836, at an expense of £1,700. The other places of worship are a
Free church at Haidgate, an United Presbyterian church, and a
Eo'min Catholic chapel; there is also a Board school — a handsome
stone building — and a Roman Catholic school. Perhaps the most
ancient bridge in Scotland exists hero ; a stone near to it bears the
following inscription :—

which is thus translated : — " This bridge was built under tho
auspices of the Emperor Titus JElius Antonious Adiiannus
Augustus, father of his country, by Quintus Lollins TJrbicus, his
lieutenant; being almost ruinous, it was restored by Lord Blantyre
in the year 1772." A little above the bridge there was a fort and
watch tower, visible when Pennant visited this quarter in 1772,
but no vestige of them now remains. The water works a Cochna,
constructed in 1874, supply Duutoeher, Dalmuir and Clydebank with,
water. Hardgate is about a quarter of a mile east from Duntocher,
and Faifi.ey about the same distance north thereof. Population in.
1S81, 1,594. Estimated population in 18S4, including Hardgate and
Faifley, 2,800.
Dalmuir is a village about one and a half miles from Duntocher.
Here are several-genteel residences, pleasantly situated on elevated
sites, commanding fine views of the Clyde and the surrounding
country. Population of Dalmuir in 1881, 1,073. Estimated popula-
tion in 1884, 1,800.
Clydebank is a rapidly increasing district, extending
from Dalmuir to Yoker. A new branch lino >f railway from
Clydebank to Partick was opened in December, 18S2, and
continued on to Yonkhill, February, 18S5; at Stobcross Junction
this line joins the underground railway for Glasgow (Queen
street). Messrs. J. & G. Thomson's large ship building yard
and engineering works ate situated here, covering thirty acres of
land, and giving employment to 4,000 men.
At Kilbowie are the extensive works of tho Singer Manufacturing
Company, recently erected, which cover 25 acres of ground, and
employ between three and fonr thousand persons. The places of
worship are the Established church, Hamilton Free church, erected
in 1884, and the Clydebank Union church, built in 1877; there is
also a Board school. A new public hall, affording accommodation
for an assembly of 1,000 people, was opened io September, 1884,
attached to which is a public library and reading room. Estimated
population in 1884, 3,000.
Yoker is a village about 4 miles e. from Old Kilpatrick, and 6 w.
from Glasgow, tho eastern portion of the village being in the county
and burgh of Renfrew. Here is a distillery and a Board school.
Estimated population in 1884, 1,300.
