Glasgow, 13 s. from Stirling, 9 w. from Falkirk, 7 e. from Kirkintilloch,

Glasgow manufacturers, is carried on here, but the staple business of
the district is mining, there being several coal and lime works and

church is at the west end of the village, occupying a commanding site,
and embosomed among trees ; there is also a commodious Free church,
erected in 1826. Cumbernauld possesses a good public library and sub-
scription newsroom. The country around the village is well wooded,
and agreeably varied with gentle eminences and rural dales. The prin-
