N.
NEWMILNS AND DARVEL-.
EWMILNS is a neat market and manufacturing
town, and burgh of barony, in the parish of Loudoun,
district of Cunningham ; 24 miles s. of Glasgow, 18 n.e.
of Ayr, 7 e. by s. of Kilmarnock, and 16 n. of Cum-
nock ; situated on the bank of the river Irvine, about
two miles east from the village of Gal-ton. It was
made a burgh of barony by King James IV. in I4i)0;
and the charter was confirmed by Sir Matthew Camp-
bell, of Loudoun, in 1566. The bailies are competent
to hold courts, from which there is no appeal, except
to the court of sessions; and in other respects their
jurisdiction is as ample as that of most royal burghs.
There is a police commission for the better regulation
and improvement of the town, consisting of seven
members; the chief magistrate is the chief commis-
sioner. The Marguess of Hastings is superior of the
burgh ; Thomas Brown,.Esq. of Waterhaughs, has also
considerable property here, and is superior of a neigh-
bouring village called Greenholm. The weaving of
muslins is called on here extensively— one thousand
hands being employed in this branch of manufacture.
The places of worship are an Established Church, a
Free Church, and a meeting-house of the United
Secession body. The parochial school, and a Sabbath
evening school, are both well attended : in the latter
more than three hundred children of the working clas-
ses receive instruction.
In the centre of the town is seen the remains of an
old castle, said to have been erected as early as that of
Edinburgh, but record is silent or obscure concerning
its ancient possessors. Within the parish, and about a
mile and a half from the town, is Loudoun Castle, the
elegant seat of the Marquess of Hastings : it is a large
and magnificent castellated pile, standing amidst beau-
tiful natural woods and tasteful artificial plantations.
Near the mansion is the old parish kirk of Loudoun,
bearing the early date of 615. The only part now
standing is that which formed the choir, and is now
the place of sepulture of the noble families of Loudoun
and Hastings ; and here rest the remains of the la- i
minted Lady flora Hastings, whose death, in the prime !
of life, caused such a mournful sensation, as connected
with the court of her present Majesty.
Darvel is a small village, in the same parish aa
Newmilns. In this neighbourhood is Loudoun Castle,
before noticed ; and the woods and braes of Loudoun
furnish a theme for one of Tannahill's best songs. The
Marchioness of Hastings benevolently erected a school
and formed a cemetery in this village, the school is
still maintained by the family.
