Xs a parish in the Kyle district — the village is 43 miles
s. of Glasgow, 21 s.s.e. of Kilmarnock, the same dis-
tance w. by s. of Ayr, 10 n. by e. of Dalmellingtou,
12 w. by N. of Sanquhar, 34 N. w. of Tbornhill, and 5
:;.e. of Cumnock. The pa.-ish, which lie.!' r>n tlie east-
ern boundary of that of Cumnock (or Old Cumnock)
is in general hilly, and affords ercell?ot pastuie for
sheep; but there are many spot* ot rich arable land.

about four miles in length, up the glen of Afton; by
.continuing the line six miles farther, a communication
should be effected between thi« par) 61 Ayrshire and
the adjoining county of Galloway, which would shorten
the present distance iiy twelve miles— all carriages
qeing now obliged to take the circuitous route of
Dalmellington. The Free church stands on this site.
A cattle fair is held in the vuiage, on the Thursday
immediately preceding Whi'sui'lide.
