OCHILTREE
Is a small but pleasant village, in the parish of that
name, district of Kvle, 64 miles s.w. from Edinburgh,
49 N.w.from Dumfries, 37 s. from Glasgow, 28 N. by
E. from Girvan, 22 n.w. from Sanquhar, 16' s. from Kil-
marnock, the like distance n.f. from May bole, 11£ e.
from Ayr, and 4 from Old Cumnock, situated on the
outh side of the Lugar water, and on the high road
from Ayr to Dumfries and Edinburgh. The country
around is delightfully picturesque, and the face ot the
parish, which is pretty level, with some agreeable un-
dulations, is well watered. The great Scottish refor-
mer, John Knox, mariied his second wife at this vil-
lage ; she was the daughter of Lord Ochiltree, who at
that period resided at Ocliiltiee House, now the man-
sion of the Dowager Lady Boswell. Ochiltree formerly
gave a baron's title to a branch of the familv of Stt i"-
ait. The church, like most otheis in this part of the
county, is a plain building. The Parochial and Free
schools are well attended, and there is a subscription
library well selected. Fairs are held on the second;
Wednesday in May, and the first Tuesday in Novem-
ber, for cattle.
POST OFFICE Thomas Cuthbert, Post Master.— Letters arrive every morning at half-past eight, and
are despatched every afternoon at two.
