The general objects of this Society are (1) the
assistance of the poor in such a manner aj shall
effect permanent benefit in their condition ; (2) the
organisation of charitable efforts in the city, .ind the
prevention of overlapping ; the repression of men-
dicity ; the exposure of imposture ; and the collec-
tion and diittibution of subscriptions for all hona-
fide charitable and benevolent institutions in the
city; (.8) the promotion of thrift and of vf ell-ad vised
methods for improving the condition of the poor.

A labour yard has been opened for the purpose of
providing temporary relief for able-bodied married
men, and a test of their desire to work.
The Society has alto an Industrial Shelter at
78 Kyle btreet. Port Dundas, where food and
lodging will be provided to homeless able-bodied men
in return for work done.
The Society has initiated a scheme for providing
healthy, necessitous children with boots and clothing
during the winter months, under the safeguard of the
police and the co-operation of the pawnbrokers.
Contributions towards the funds of the Society are
urgently required, and should be sent to the Treasurer
at 212 Bath Street.
The society also serves as a central agency for the
purpose of receiving the contributions of the public
towards bona fide charitable institutions. These
contributions may be sent to the society monthly,
quarterly, half-yearly or yearly, or at whatever time
it may be most convenient. Printed lists are supplied
at the office.
In connection with this society a ladies' auxiliary
has been established for the purpose of aiding the
society by personal visitation of the poor, and also by
providing temporary employment in the way of sew-
ing for poor women, who have been proved to be
deserving and necessitous. Work-Room, 11 Maitland

WEST OF SCOTLAND CONVALESCENT
SEASIDE HOMES, DUNOON.
This Institution is designed for the necessitous and
deserving of the industrial classes who have been in
illness, in order to give them the benefit of the restora-
tive influences of a short residence at the seaside, dur-
ing the period of convalescence. Since the Homes were
opened thirty-four years ago, 96,059 patients have
been restored to health. There is accommodation for
250 persons; and, added to a generous diet, there is
afforded the benefit of the best medical advice and
medicines, as also the use of superior hot and cold
water baths. The Board of Management earnestly
appeal for annual subscriptions and donations, these
being the only source of revenue. It may be well
to mention that each donor of £20, or annual sub-
scriber of £1, is entitled to recommend one person
annually for admission to the Homes.

HUTCHESONS' HOSPITAL.
The funds are designed for citizens of Glasgow, or
of persons who, in the estimation of the patrons, may
be considered needful and deserving of aid, and who
shall have carried on business or trade in Glasgow for
some time and to some extent, on their own account,
or who shall have been in any way the means of pro-
moting the prosperity of the city, who by misfortune
have been reduced in circumstances; and also in
favour of the widows and daughters of persons of
the above description whose circumstances the patrons
may consider call for such assistance ; a preference
to be given, cceteris paHbus, to persons enrolled as
burgesses of Glasgow previous to the 13th January,
1871. Persons receiving aid from the parish or ses-
sion are not eligible as pensioners. Applicants ought
to be at least 50 years of age. Widows having two
or more children dependent on them may, however,
be enrolled at 40 years of age. The claims of appli-
cants resident within the distance of one mile from
Glasgow are preferable to those resident at a distance.

MAXWELL AND HUTCHESON CHARITABLE
TRUST.
Founded in 1877, under the will of Miss Ann
Maxwell Graham of Williamwood, for the benefit of
necessitous persons, chiefly gentlefolk, of the name
of Maxwell or Hutcheson, and husbands or wives
of, or descendants of, these names. The Trustees
