PARKINSON'S
PATENT GAS REGULATOR,
BURY, LANCASHIRE.
A VARIETY of apparatus have of late been brought before the public, for the purpose
of giving one uniform pressure of Gas to the burner. The complication of some,
and the liability in others to go out of order, have determined Mr. JOHN PARKINSON,
of Bury, Lancashire, to lay before the public an invention embracing all the qualities
necessary, combined with simplicity, for carrying out such a valuble and useful object.
It has long been the opinion of the most eminent Gas Engineers, that there is one
uniform pressure under which Gas should be supplied to the burner, and when that pres-
sure is exceeded, a larye amount of Gas escapes unconsumed, thereby impregnating the
atmosphere in mills, dwelling-houses, public buildings, &c, destroying paintings, gilding,
books, and, above all, that invaluable boon — health. This evil may be avoided by using
the above simple and economical invention.
Practical experience has proved that the greatest illuminating power may be obtained
from Gas, at a pressure of about one-half inch column of water; and as one-eighth of an
inch above this pressure is equal to 14 per cent, in consumption, it necessarily follows
that within a distance of 30 miles of a radius round St. Paul's, or the same distance
round the Manchester Exchange, where five thousand millions of cubic feet are con-
sumed, the saving effected would amount to seven or eight hundred thousand pounds
annually.
Messrs. Chambers, of Edinburgh, commenting on the advantages arising from uniform
pressure, state, that the difference in consumption would be 14- per cent, for each eighth of
an inch. Thus, in a mill or manufactory, say of six stories, eacli ten feet above the other,
with a pressure from the main of 6-10ths of an inch, and the altitude between the highest
and lowest lights being 50 feet, the Gas in the highest, or sixth floor, would issue from
the burners with the pressure of ll-10ths, the fifth 10-10ths, the (ourth 9-10tlis, and
so on ; thus greatly increasing the consumption in the higher floors over the lower ones,
with corresponding disadvantage to the consumer.
The Patentee, in introducing his Regulator, feels assured that the public will find it a
most useful means of obtaining a uniform pressure of Gas and illuminating power, with
an economy corresponding to previous irregularity.
