EXAMINATIONS OF PERSONS UNDER SPIRITUAL CONCERN II
Isabel Mathies Account Continued.
After which I was greatly troubled with hardness of heart and could get no
rest and I was still seeking from & praying to God for deliverance from the
body of sin and many a time when I essayed duty I could do nothing but groan
I was some what relieved from that in hearing a Minr [f]1 (Mr. Robe)2
preach on Isa 53. He hath put him to grief when thou shalt make his Soul
an offering for Sin3 the words of the text were very reviving to Me. I heard
also anoyr Minr on yt same day (Mr Henderson)4 on Rom 8. Who shall
lay anything to y’ Charge of Gods Elect5 & That Minr gave some of the
Marks of the persons who could might say with the ap there and I thought
I could apply them which was a means of comforting Me. On Saturday I
heard anoyr Minr (Mr Webster)6 from P: Unto you there for y Believe he
is precious7 My faith was then in lively exercise and I thought tho C should
stay me yet I would lay me down at his feet for Mercy and The Redeemer
was precious to my Soul. The Minr of yt Place had his Action Sermon text
from 1 Jo: Here is Ch herein is love &c: in time of that Sermon I found my
heart greatly drawn out in love towards Christ and I continued in this frame
at the Lords table as I was going forward to the table that promise in Zech:
was very refreshing to me which came in with great power & sweetness I will
pour out the Spirit of Grace & Supplication8 [614/-] and I found the desires
of My heart greatly inlarged for greater measures of grace and The Redeemer
in his person and benefits was altogether lovely to my Soul In my way home
that night temptations came into My Mind but I got strength to resist them.
On the Munday I heard a Minr (Mr Hamilton9 on Eph: pray without
ceasing10 And he was shewing by what marks a person might Know that
they got returns of prayer from God amongst others he named this that it
was a good evidence God answered our prayers when in time of temptation
we got Strength to resist them I could not but say God had upholden me in
time of my troubles frequently and strengthened Me to resist temptations
and my reflecting on this when I reflected on this it was very sweet to me &
I was inabled to bless & praise the name of God for helping me in the time
of my need and supporting Me in the dark hours of temptation after this
occasion was over I continued in a humble & thankfull frame for what God
