EXAMINATIONS OF PERSONS UNDER SPIRITUAL CONCERN II
11
[25/—] b.l. A young woman of 191
My parents being Religious Persons, by any thing I could formerly, or can
yet judge, brought me []2 in a Religious way: and I conformed to their
Instructions and Example, in an outward way, & was restrained in mercy from
things vicious before men, usd to go to Kirk on Sabbaths & to pray twice or
once at least Every day from [ ]3 Childhood. I usd however sometimes in
converse, when I would have the person that spoke to me, & seem’d to doubt
of what I told, have said, In Truth it is so, or Faith, Haith it is so: I saw no evil
in that way of speaking then, but I often since have been made to see much
evil in my speaking so, & to mourn in secret for it. And because I kept up a
form of Religious Duties, I made no doubt but this would take me to Heaven.
And thus things continued with me, without any thing like an awakening,
or sense of sin or my natural lost state, till in October 1740, when the Sacrament
Occasion at Glasglow drawing near, my mistress said to me, Are you not
thinking to partake of the Sacrament at this time? I said No, I was not, for I
was not prepar’d: She answered, I’ll warrant there will many as unprepared
there [ ] :41 then began to think with my Self, Surely I [26/—] must be a great
Hypocrite when my Mistress has such thoughts of me. And tho’ I saw I was
not fit to go to the Lords Table, yet I thought it would be fit for me before
such an occasion to read the History of Christ’ Sufferings in the Gospel: but
as I turn’d over my Bible, I saw a mark (or corner of my Bible-Leaf folded
down) & knowing that I did not use to put a mark, but in places where I had
formerly observd something remarkable, I asked a Blessing on what I was
going to read, as I always usd to do when I was going to read in the Bible,
[ ]5 give me the sanctifyd use of it; and resolvd, I would read what was there
before I went any further: & as I read there []6 and came to the 41st verse,
And Jesus moved with compassion, put forth his hand and touched him (the
Leper) and said, I will. Be thou clean:7 upon which I was made to believe
that Christ was willing to heal & cleanse my Soul from the leprosy of Sin;
But I was wofully averse to come to be healed & cleansed by him: at the
thoughts of this, I fell into great uneasiness & distress of mind. I asked my

Greenock. Taught to read the Bible when a child, got the Shorter Catechism by heart, and
retained it.
