Madame, tout mon heur sera servir a la mere et a la fille
et escouterez tousiours ce qu’il vous plaira me commander
pour estre suivi et espere si bien mesnager que vous serez
contante. Je vous supplie seulemant, Madame, vous
asseurer que vous aurez une fille du plus grant commance-
ment qui fut James et la myeulx norrie, et ne vous puis celer
que Madame de Parroys 1 y faict si bien qu’il ne se pourroyt
rien de myeulx et soyiez seure que Dieu est bien servi et a
la vielle facon. Ce porteur vous dira la harangue que la
Royne vostre fille fist au Roy.2 Je n’oublie pas a bien
ramentevoir d’estre songneus a sa bouche mais a dire
verite ilz sont si mal en Pestat que sont que j’ay grande
enuye la voir mestresse et son estat a part.I

From Maximilien de Bourgogne to the Queen Dowager
1552-3. Vol. iv. 64.
He has received the letter which the Queen was pleased to write to his
mother-in-law, the Dowager Duchess of Arschot, which he gave to the
Duchess. He sends this letter together with her answer. Written from
Le Vere on the 11th March 1552.
A LA ROYNE d’eSCOSSE.
Madame, j’ay receu la lettre qu’il a pleu a vostre Mageste
escripre a Madame ma belle mere, la Douayriere Duchesse

2 la harangue que la Royne vostre fille fist au Roy. The one mentioned by
Brant6me was of the year 1554 (De Ruble, p. 98). Montaiglon (Latin Thhnes
of Mary Stuart) gives the date as the beginning of 1555.
3 This letter has been printed by Labanoff and others in the parts which
refer to Mary Stuart, but not in those which refer to the business of the Queen
Dowager, which are sufficiently interesting to justify printing the whole.
