outside the curia of the late prior, Thomas. The priory, however,
had been detained without canonical title and its goods wasted for
more than four years by a certain Mathue alias Walter calling
himself monk of the said priory and notorious as a fornicator.
Mandatory letters had been issued for Mathue to be summoned and
examined and if the above were true he was to be removed,1 so if
this has been effected Cristinu$ is to have possession of the priory,
being transferred from the said monastery of the Blessed Mary not¬
withstanding his defect of birth as son of unmarried parents from
which he had earlier been dispensed to hold such a benefice.

To the bishop of St Andrews. Mandate to summon Mathue alias
Walter calling himself monk of the Valliscaulian order and examine
him on charges brought by Cristinus Donaldi, monk of the mon¬
astery of Blessed Mary and St John the Baptist [Ardchattan],
o.vallis caul., under the rule of St Benedict, wont to be ruled
by a prior, to the effect that on the death outside the curia of
Thomas, late prior of the monastery of Beauly, said order, Mathue
a notorious fornicator took possession of the priory thus vacant,
without canonical title and wasted its goods for more than four
years. If the charges are proven Mathue is to be deprived of any
rights he might have to the said monastery and be removed.

and examine a certain John Benvy on charges brought by Alexander
de Lichton, doncel, St Andrews diocese, to the effect that when the
preceptory called priory, of the hospital of St John of Jerusalem of
Torfichine, said diocese, unlawfully held by the late Hillebrandis
Anglicus, a notorious schismatic, became vacant by his death outside
