Note on the Statistical Tables of the Punjab Mental Hospital,
                            Lahore, for the year 1924.

Statement I.—Ad-
missions, discharges,
etc.

Population.— The total number of patients treated during
the year is 1,193 as compared with 1,197 in 1923
and 1,168 in 1922. The daily average popula-
tion for the last three years is 867.17, 899.53
and 875.27. The slight drop in 1924 can be attributed to the
fact that the rate of maintenance of patients was raised with
effect from 1st January 1924 from Rs. 16 to Rs. 20 per mensem
as the hospital was previously being run at a loss. The increase
has, however, deterred a certain number of individuals from
admitting their insane relatives and some of the patients have
been removed for the same reason.

The total discharges from the Institution for the last three
years have been 230, 234 and 232. There has been a marked
increase in the number of cases discharged cured in 1924 over
the two preceding years, viz., 113, 123 and 144. The percentage
of cures to daily average strength for these years is 13.03, 13.67
and 16.45. The high rate of cure obtained in 1924 is very satis-
factory, especially since the number of patients admitted for
insanity due to Canabis Indica has been below the average, and
such cases are the most hopeful as far as their ultimate recovery
is concerned. In 1924, only 46 cases of this form of insanity
were admitted, whereas the average for the preceding three years
is 57.

The death rate is somewhat higher than it has been for the
last three years and amounts to 11.31 per cent of the daily
average strength.

The average percentage for the last 20 years is 11.36.

Sickness             and
Mortality.

2. The daily average sick amounts to 52.17 as compared
with 51.83 and 40.61 for the two preceding years.
The most common type of physical illness is
Diarrhœa and Dysentery which account for 179
cases with 34 deaths Pneumonia as usual took a heavy toll
of patients. There were 34 cases with 20 deaths. Forty cases
of T. B. of the lung were treated in the course of the year
with 13 deaths. The incidence of cases of malaria which
required hospital treatment was very slight, amounting to 24
cases with 2 deaths.
