226 FAMILY AND DOMESTIC LETTERS. [1633.

Kingis coronatioun.
The Commission anent the lawes is not muche reguairclit, and is lickhe to
be desertid : quhat vther articles ar to be agitat, I shall signifie at more lenthe
heirefter. The Erie of Airthe hes voluntarhe left the town, and refeirit himselffe
to Airthe, or, as some sayes, to Monteithe.
Their hes vnhapilie fallin furthe a slauchter betuix the guidman of Killoche
and ane vther callit Mathew Campbell, and Mathew Campbell is killit. Killoche
is in the Tolbuithe, and the mater is lickhe to setle be agriement.
All vther particularis I remitt to the nixt occasion, because I mynd to wryt
more fully heirefter. Sua, my deuty being rememberit, I humbbe rest

the Lord Carnegie and some vuther, quherof at more lenthe at ane vther
occasion.
To the rycht honorable and my weel respectit Cheiffe,
Sir Johne Maxuell of Netherpollok, Knycht.
William Cochrane of Coldoune, afterwards created Earl of Dundonald,
to Sir John Maxwell of Pollok, 17th June 1633.
232. Right honorabill, wpon Saturnday last the Kinge came to Edinburgh out of
Dakeithe in the Lange Gaitt, wher, at his entrie in the Lange Gaitt, ther schott
about fyftie cannon. In the mides of the Lange Gaitt he left his coche and
took horses, and so came to the West Port, wher ther wes sett three goddesses,
Edina, Justice, and Relligioune. Ther Edina, who wes the President's son,
made ane speeche and delyvered the keys. A littill within the Port wes made
ane longe scaffold, Avher satt the provest, ballis, and old baillies, to the number
of twentie, in purpure gouns lyned with furringe, and about ane hundrethe
