36 STATE AND OFFICIAL LETTERS. [1599.
Maiesties yeirs to ryid so in suche a storme. She aunsuered in gret anger ' My
years ! mades, to your horses quickly,' and so rode all the way, nocht wouchafing
any gratious countenance on him for two dayes. And as she passed by Kings-
toun, ane old man fell on his kneis, praying God she might leve ane hundreth
years ; whiche pleased her so as it myght come to pas : whiche I take to be
caus that some preachers pray that she may last as the sone and the moone ;
and yett they know (I think), that the sone finisheth his cours once a day, and
once a year : as also the moone changeth monethly, etc.
He sayes me he saw her dance throw the windo on Weddnisday the fyft
of this, the spaines pavie to a whissill tabourier, none being with her bot the
lady Warwick. All these news have I of him, whiche I thoght guid to lat your
Maiestie know, and vs as seria mixta iocis, and graver purposes your Maiestie
shall have or it be long, and when I shall know from your Hienes that ye do
nocht like to know of suche triffies, I will ceis at the first.
I complained to my lord Thesaurer, by the assistance of Mr. Hudsoun, of
sum iniurious speeches gevin out by one Atkeinsoun against your Maiestie,
whiche his lordship hath desired to be putt in wrett, and I shall sie what cours
he shall vs in that matter : so that as yett I can nocht complaine of any of estate
heir, bot that all are wdfing to discharge that dewtie to your Maiestie whiche
ye demerite of thame.
Pleas your Maiestie, concredite thes to your Hienes' servant, Sir George
Elphinstoun, if your Maiestie abolish thame nocht.
Your Maiesties servand, James Hudsoun, geveth me no small fight for
prosecuting your Hienes effairs, as I hope the effects shall try : and therefore
I must be so bold as humbly to remember your Maiestie how ernistly your
Hienes remembred him to me by directioun to my lord Thesaurer at my last
dispesche ; for dignus est mercenarius mercede sua.
God incres your Maiestie according and more nor he hath gevin of apper-
ance already.
Your Maiestie's most humbly affectionate subiect and servaunt,
Londoun, the xv of September 1599. I / 1(71/ * /* O .
To the King's Maiestie. <z >> O C/
