lands were sold by the deceased John, earl of Craufurd, to the deceased David
Lyoun of Kynnel, under reversion, and had been redeemed by William Wod
as cessioner of David, earl of Craufurd, the heir and successor of earl John,
from " John Lioun, of Haltoun of Esse, the son and heir of the said David
Lyoun." 1 In 1539 there is a crown confirmation of charter of sale by David,
earl of Craufurd, lord Lindesay, to Elizabeth Lindesay, and her son John
Lyoun of Haltoun of Esse, of the lands of Bow, Ballinscheo, and Wodheid, in
the barony of the forest of Platane and sheriffdom of Forfar. 2
Finally, the following deeds may be noted 3: — Assignation dated 22 december
1541 by David, earl of Crawford, son and heir of Alexander, seventh earl of
Crawford, to David Lindsay of Edzell and his heirs, of the reversions of the
earldom of Crawford, " including a reversioun maid to us (earl David) by
Elizabethe Lyndesay and Johne Lyoune her sone upon the redemptioune of
the lands of Quylkach together with twa reversionis made to us be the saidis
Elizabeth and Johne upoune the redemption of the lands of Bow," which lands
the Lyons then held. 4 By a reversion, dated 3 September 1539, of the lands of
Quilkeach, by Elizabeth Lindsay, she designs herself the relict of umquhile
David Lyoun of Brakie, while Johne Lyoune is again styled her son.s
On 4 november 1544 there is a crown charter of confirmation and novo-
damus to John Lyoun of Haltoun of Esse, and Marjorie Ogilvy, his spouse, of the
lands of Haltoun of Esse in the shire of Forfar, on John's resignation. 6 The
spouses were alive in 1553.7
On 28 april 1567 John (eighth), lord Glammis, afterwards lord chancellor,
resigned his lands and barony of Baky, the lands of Drumgleyis, and Carden,
Fallinche, Drumgeith, and Cossynnis in the sheriffdom of Forfar ; and his
lands of Cullace, Buttergask, Litill Bello, Benderrane, and Forgoundeveny in
the sheriffdom of Perth, into the hands of the crown, and received a new grant
to the following series of heirs : —
1. John, lord Glammis, the entailer, and his heirs male. They succeeded,
and the present head of the house of Lyon is the right honourable
Claude Bowes Lyon, earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, viscount
Lyon, baron Glamis, Tannadyce, Sidlaw, and Strathdichtie, in
the peerage of Scotland ; baron Bowes of Streatlam castle in the
county of Durham, and of Lunedale in the county of York, in the
peerage of the united kingdom ; lord lieutenant of the county of
Forfar ; a deputy lieutenant of the county of the city of Dundee.
