IX.— JOHN LYON I.
OF HALTOUN OK ESSE AND OF COSSINS.
1512-1585.
The following references prove John Lyon, of Haltoun of Esse, and of
Cossins, to have been the son and heir of David Lyon, of Kynblathmont, and
of Kynnell, and Elizabeth Lindsay, his wife : —
By an ordinance of king James IV. and his lords, passed at Twesilhauch in
Northumberland, 24 august 15 13, sixteen days before the battle of Flodden
field, and incorporated with the acts of the parliaments of Scotland, "it is statut
and ordanit be the kingis hienes witht aviss of al his lordis being thar for the
tyme in his ost in this forme as eftir follois that is to say gif ony man beis slane
or hurt to deid in the kingis army and ost be Inglismen or deis in his army
enduring the tyme of his ost, his aieris sail haue his ward releife and mariage
of the king free dispensand with his aige quhat zeild [age] that euer he be of,
and ordanis the kingis letterez to be direct herapone to the effect foirsaid
necessar as efferis." x
In virtue of this act John Lyoun, son and heir of David, was infeft by
the crown in the lands and barony of Kynblathmont, 5 november 15 13 ; 2 and"
on 19 June 15 14 in the lands and barony of Forgandevynny in the county
of Perth.3 Crown grant, 18 may 1529, by king James V. to John Lyoun, son
and heir of the deceased David Lyoun, of Kinblathmont, of the lands of Kintirie,
in the barony of Ethibetoun, regality of Kerymure, and sheriffdom of Forfar,
formerly held by John from Archibald, earl of Angus, who had been forfeited. 4
In the same year there is a crown grant to John, of the lands of Haltoun
of Esse in the sheriffdom of Forfar, on the resignation as regards one half of the
lands, of John himself, and as regards the other half, of Elizabeth Lindesay, his
mother ; in this grant John is again designed son and heir of the deceased
David Lyoun of Kinblathmont.s In 1530 John Lyoun of Cossynnis is one of
the assize on a valuation of lands in the sheriffdom of Perth. 6
John Lyoun, son and heir of the deceased David Lyoun of Kynnell, and
Patrick Lyoun, John's brother german,7 are witnesses to the charter dated
at Dundee . . October 1530, by Alexander Lindsay," master of Craufurd, to
William Wod of Bonyntoun, of certain lands in the barony of Fynnevin, in the
forest of Platane and sheriffdom of Forfar.
On 14 august 1531 there is a crown charter to William Wod of Bonyntoun,
of the lands and barony of Kinblathmont in the sheriffdom of Forfar, which
