THE HAMILTONS OF BARDOWIE 105
(464) James Hamilton of Bangour, Advocate. Will recorded 13th June 1706
(Edinburgh). He was served heir to his father and mother 4th January
1679, and had a charter of Bangour 6th March 1691. He married Eliza-
beth, daughter of John Hamilton of Murrays or Muirhouse, and had : —
(a) John (No. 465).
(b) William (No. 466).
Hrni0 recorded in Lyon Office, 1672-77. — Gules, a mullet between three cinque-
foils argent, on a chief of the second another mullet of the first. [Plate VI.,
fig- 5-]
(465) JOHN Hamilton OF Bangour, died s.p. 1750. Will recorded 26th February
1754 (Edinburgh). He was served heir to his father 6th August 1706
and 25th November 1730, and to his uncle, Sir William Hamilton
of Whitelaw, 19th April 1707. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir
William Dalrymple, third Baronet of Cousland, and was succeeded by
his brother : —
(466) William Hamilton of Bangour, born 1704; died 25th March 1754. Will
recorded 8th March 1766 (Edinburgh). He was the well-known poet.
He married a daughter of Sir James Hall, Bt. of Dunglass, and had : —
(467) James Hamilton of Bangour, who was served heir to his father 16th
September 1754. He married, 1770, Peggie Bruce of Kinnaird (Scots
Magazine), and had : —
(468) William Hamilton of Bangour. Married, 1797, Ann, daughter of Edward
Lee, of Waterford, and had : —
(469) James Hamilton of Bangour, died 2nd March 185 1. He was served heir
to his grandfather, James Hamilton, 25th October 181 5. He married,
24th October 1824, Mary Ramsay Maule, daughter of William, first Lord
Panmure. She died September 1864.

Bardowie.
Authorities — House of Hamilton and the Discussion between Dr Hamilton of Bardowie
and fohn Riddell, Advocate.
(470) John Hamilton, fourth (and second of the same name) son of David
Hamilton of Cadzow (No. 4). He was granted the lands of Buthernock
by Duncan, Earl of Lennox, which had been resigned by his eldest
brother, Sir John Hamilton of Cadzow. He was designed "of Bardowie"
in a charter about 1390. He apparently married Margaret Fraser, and
had : —
(471) John Hamilton of Buthernock, who was succeeded by his son : —
(472) Robert Hamilton of Buthernock, living 1454. He was probably father
of: —
(473) John Hamilton of Buthernock and Bardowie, living 1487. His
son : —
(464) James Hamilton of Bangour, Advocate. Will recorded 13th June 1706
