He was Provost of Glasgow, and married Elizabeth Adam. Her Will
recorded 9th March 1622 (Glasgow). They had two sons : —
(a) Robert (No. 369).
(b) James Hamilton. Will recorded 21st October 1663 (Glasgow).
(369) Robert Hamilton of Aikenhead. Served heir to his father 28th Dec-
ember 1633. He was father of: —
(370) James Hamilton of Aikenhead, who was served heir to his father 10th
October 1649. He married, first, Anne, daughter of Porterfield of that
Ilk, and had twelve children. By his second wife he had eight children.
He married, third, Margaret, daughter of James Muirhead of Bredisholme,
and had ten children — thirty children in all.
Hri1l6 recorded in Lyon Office, 1672-77. — Gules, a hunting horn between three
cinquefoils argent. [Plate V., fig. 8.] CREST : A hand holding an oaken

By his last marriage he had five sons, of whom : —
(371) James Hamilton succeeded to Aikenhead. He died August 1740. His
Will recorded 2nd February and 24th April 1741, 30th March and nth
May 1743, 25th July 1744, 19th November 1747, and 21st March 1750
(Glasgow). He was served heir to his father 3rd August 1722, and
married Mary, daughter of John Govan of Hoggenfield, and had : —
(a) James (No. 372).
(b) John Hamilton, Merchant in Glasgow ; died about 1st
August 1754.
(372) James Hamilton of Aikenhead, died 14th April 1770. His Will re-
corded 17th January 1788 (Edinburgh). He was served heir to his
father 5th December 1740 and 2nd February 1741 ; to his mother 12th
January 1728; to his brother, John, 13th December 1754; and to his
great-grandfather, Robert, 16th June 1768. He married, 12th January
1759, Marion, daughter of Major Robertson of Earnock (Scots Magazine),
and had : —
(a) James (No. 373).
(b) John Hamilton.
(373) James Hamilton of Aikenhead and Holmhead. He was served heir
to his grandfather 2nd February 1770, and to his father 8th September
1774, 5th February 1778, and 16th August 1808.

(374) James Hamilton of Peill-Thorntoun, Lanark, second son of Robert
Hamilton (No. 361). His Will recorded 4th June 1601 (Edinburgh).
He is said to have married, first, Christian Stewart, and, second, Elizabeth
Crawford. The latter's Will was recorded 6th August 1586 (Edinburgh).
His son : —
(375) Andrew Hamilton, died v.p. He is said to have married Agnes, daughter
of Patrick Crawford of Carlisburne. He left two daughters, of whom
