| Description | King George V looking at a German dugout, Western Front, during World War I. King George V of Britain (1865-1936) and three officers touring what appear to be captured German trenches. They are looking in the entrance of a well-made dugout. The entrance is framed with timber and there is ample sandbag insulation over the roof. The German trenches and dugouts were generally thought to be better than those of the Allies. In part this was due to the vast resources of all sorts of materials, such as timber, that were available to the Germans. The Allies were more restricted with part of France occupied and all supplies from Britain needing to be shipped. [Original reads: 'H.M. the King outside a German dug out.'] |
