| Description | King George V reviewing troops, Western Front, during World War I. This is one of a number of photographs of royal visits to the Western Front. On this occasion, King George V of Britain (1865-1936) and some of his senior commanders are walking down a village street past cheering troops. Civilians appear to be watching from the windows of the house in the background. The king and other members of the royal family, such as the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Connaught, made regular trips to the Front to review troops, award medals and boost morale. It is ironic that the British royal family was used as an icon of patriotism when they were closely related to the German royal family. [Original reads: 'Troops cheering the King.'] |
