| Description | King George V surveys the ruins of Peronne from a hill top. He is standing at the front of a group of uniformed men, holding a cane in his right hand. The damage to the town is extensive. Peronne along with countless other towns and villages on the Western Front, was completely destroyed as a result of the fighting during World War I. Photographs of visiting dignitaries and members of royalty, taken by official photographers, were often used as propaganda by the Government and Military. Whilst the visits were intended to boost morale amongst those at the Front, the images were meant to reassure those at home. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH FROM THE WESTERN FRONT.
