| Description | King George V and his entourage standing on a bridge in the French town of Peronne. Whilst the bridge remains intact, the street in the background has suffered extensive damage. Most of the buildings have been reduced to piles of rubble - a familiar sight in many of the towns and villages along the Western Front. Due to its proximity to the Front, Peronne suffered much devastation during World War I. Situated on a bend in the River Somme, it was particularly vulnerable during the Somme Offensive of 1916.
