| Description | Four soldiers are standing on the far away edge of a courtyard created by the walls of two buildings. The furthest away building is bombed-out and so part of the roof and walls are missing as are the windows and doors. The brick gable end of another building is just visible behind this one. The soldiers are not in their full uniforms and one them is balancing a shovel over his shoulder. They are standing looking at a garden in the middle of the courtyard, which possibly they have created. A pretty pattern has been made out of some white material and there is an English flag flying in the middle of it all. Dressing stations were the first contact an injured soldier had with medical aid. They were fairly basic affairs for immediate aid and so once there the soldier would be assessed and if further medical attention was required then the soldier could be sent to one of the hospitals further behind the lines. | Description | John Warwick Brooke, of the Topical Press Agency, was the second British official war photographer to go to the Western Front in 1916. The demands placed on he and his colleague, Ernest Brooks, were heavy. They had to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible, a difficult task for two men covering an army of over two million. Despite this, Warwick Brooke managed to take what would become some of the most memorable images of World War I. As an officially appointed photographer, Warwick Brooke was assigned to the Western Front to follow the progress of the British Army. During his time there, between 1916 and 1918, Warwick Brooke is estimated to have taken over 4,000 photographs. |
