| Description | King George V is standing on the right of the picture looking across to the left. He is wearing a uniform and is carrying a cane. He is standing on a flattened piece of ground, which is surrounded by moorland. This land stretches as far as the eye can see and there are shallow hills in the background. The ground consists of dry, hard packed earth and there is wire fencing all around it. Inside this and along the left side of the picture is a row of ornate, painted wooden crosses. In front of these is a row of plain wooden crosses. The King is staring at these contemplatively. It is thought that this personal picture was taken by John Warwick Brooke. Royal visits were often ceremonial and special occasions, as a result they often broke the monotony of the everyday routine. This photograph was also the simplest way for the King to convey his sympathy and understanding with a lot of different people at once.
