| Description | Lieutenant General Fanshaw receiving a knighthood, during World War I. In the centre of the photograph the King is standing with four officers who are arranged in a semi-circle behind him. He is holding a raised sword which is resting on another soldier's shoulder. This soldier is resting one knee on top of a flimsy, little stool. There is a marquee pole in the middle of this scene and the sloping roof of the white tent can be seen. The tent is open down the left of the photograph and so guy ropes and poles can be seen all along this side. Behind this scene there is a queue of more soldiers in uniform all standing quite smartly presumably waiting their turn. It is thought that this ceremonial photograph was taken by John Warwick Brooke. Although knighthoods started out as a definition of status in the middle ages and denoted a member of the army, today it is awarded to acknowledge merit or honour.
